Emergency  Management

Emergency Management is the process of coordinating resources, including people and equipment, to respond to emergency incidents effectively.  This response would include protecting the health and safety of the community and its guests, preventing the loss of property and businesses and thus minimizing economic loss.

Protection and prevention is achieved through the four phases of emergency management including:

Mitigation Phase – is the identification of hazards in the area and the efforts to prevent hazards from becoming disaster or to reduce the effects of the disaster when they occur.  An example of this would be installing severe weather sirens to prevent/reduce personal injury or relocating a building out of a flood plain to prevent or reduce structural damage.

Preparation Phase – is the process developing plans of actions for when a disaster strikes, identifying and locating resources, negotiating agreements with surrounding agencies for additional assistance, training and exercising the information found in the plans.

Response Phase– is mobilization of the necessary resources including equipment and personnel to the disaster area to assist in the response to stabilize the situation.

Recovery Phase – the goal of the recovery phase is to return the affected area, which has suffered from a disaster, to its original state.
