Probation Officer

The position of Probation Officer is still  fairly new to the Prairie Island staff. Probation services have been in place since June of 2005.

This position was not only developed to work in conjunction with the Tribal Court development and implementation of the Drug Court program, but also to offer courtesy supervision of tribal members who are placed on probation in the surrounding counties.  This affords tribal members the opportunity to come back to their own community, give something back, and allow cultural healing traditions to be implemented fir  the offenders healing process.  Both of which may benefit community members and county departments.

Probation is a sentencing alternative in which defendants, after being convicted of unlawful behavior, are supervised in the community by a Probation Officer. The defendant is usually permitted to reside at home, maintain their education and/or employment and carry out normal daily activities. A defendant placed on probation agrees to comply with specific conditions of the court.

Probation is a court imposed, community-based sentence designed for offenders who require supervision, control and counseling to develop their potential as law-abiding members of the community.

It is the duty of the Probation Officer to require you to live by the Conditions of Probation.

Clients are court ordered to probation through Tribal Court and State Court.  Other Tribal Ordinances may place offenders under probation supervision for various reasons.
